“Drop your skincare!”, “What’s your skincare routine?”, “How do you achieve that glowy skin?”

Sounds familiar? Of course, they do – skincare routines have been on the limelight lately, becoming the buzziest talk of the town, be it in Twitter, in Facebook, or even in real life. With flawless, camera-ready skin of influencers, social media personalities, bloggers, and celebrities to look up to, there’ no wonder why everyone is going gaga over these regimens.

Sergio Calderon Rossi cleverly used this trend in his business, but it’s not all for money. Instead, Sergio used this opportunity to create an initiative in saving the biggest rainforest in the world, and it’s all through selling unique skincare products made with natural ingredients: Amazource.

Below are some of the highlights of the recently concluded AMA Session which will give us more insights about the cause:

QUESTION: How were you able to determine that one product purchase could protect at least 2,000 ft2 of the rainforest?

SERGIO ROSSI SAYS…

According to organizations such as Conservation International, the annual cost of protecting an acre of rainforest (43,560 ft2) is $25. We have validated this cost on the ground. As you can see in our shop, each of our products has a different protection area according to their price tag; The exact area protected by a given order depends on a variety of factors including the purchase amount, the product’s margin, the taxes paid for the product’s ingredients, and the product’s shipping cost. Anyway, our lowest price product has been assigned with an area of 2,000 sq ft. That´s why any order has a minimum protection area of 2000 sq ft. QUESTION: What are the causes of deforestation and forest degradation? Can deforestation degradation be monitored with sufficient accuracy?

SERGIO ROSSI SAYS…

Currently, there is the technology for monitoring the deforestation process. There is enough knowledge of the patterns and the processes followed by the main deforestation agents. The problem is about political priorities. If some organization (public or private) with enough resources really puts this problem as its number 1 problem it would be solved or at least to substantially relieved.  QUESTION: How are local communities in the Amazon involved in your effort? Are they receptive or has that been a challenge?

SERGIO ROSSI SAYS…

The ones that we work with were receptive because they are in a constant and conscious effort to protect their lands and forest but they are almost abandoned by governments and NGOs activities has no massive impact. So, they are open to receive any possible further support.  QUESTION: When you say you make skin care products using natural ingredients, what ingredients did you use and how did you decide on them?

SERGIO ROSSI SAYS…

We use ingredients from the rainforest such as passion fruit, acaì, coffee beans, coconuts, honey, and others. They have been used by natives for centuries and are part of their ancestral knowledge. Just in recent times, the main industry has discovered them but they have been of commonly used by these people since ever. Regarding the decision, the possibility of a permanent supply is a critical factor. QUESTION: What are some of the difficulties you face when it comes to sourcing ingredients for the skin care products?

SERGIO ROSSI SAYS…

The reliability and availability of resources are critical for this purpose. So, we first make sure we can have a steady supply to satisfy a product demand. QUESTION: Which are your most popular products and why do you think they are popular?

SERGIO ROSSI SAYS…

Our most popular products are our facial mist (Amazon Mist) which is sourced from the tiny water droplets suspended in the forest lower clouds and the mocha coffee scrub. I think people love it because of the originality of their ingredients. Fortunately, we have access to the richest biodiversity on the planet and are currently developing amazing new lines with new and unique ingredients. Be beautiful with a cause!
